ChatGPT Now Answers 40 Million Health Queries Every Day Worldwide, Report Says

ChatGPT Now Answers 40 Million Health Queries

Artificial intelligence is transforming personal health at a colossal scale, according to a new report from OpenAI.

The number of health related queries sent to ChatGPT each day has crossed the 40 million mark, according to numbers shared by OpenAI this week.

This volume reveals that for millions of users, the AI chatbox has materialized as a leading first line of defense in sourcing medical information, attaining levels of user engagement superior to dedicated telehealth platforms.

A Healthcare Ally for Billions

According to the report, health queries now account for over 5 percent of all messages sent to the chatbot worldwide.

When the platform’s user base swelled to 800 million weekly active users, researchers found that one in four of those users, about 200 million people, submit a health related prompt at least once per week.

OpenAI co founder Greg Brockman has also advocated for the change, calling it a transformative tool both from a patient empowerment and administrative perspective.

Doctors are beginning to recognize this, and some even direct patients to the tool, whether to convert complex medical notes into easily digestible summaries or figure out what their insurance is talking about.

Among the most important discoveries is the digital safety net that ChatGPT offers in underserved communities.

In the US alone, the report says close to 600k messages per week come from rural and hospital desert areas, or places with residents who are more than a 30 minute drive from any kind of urgent care facility.

For these users, the AI mostly functions as an after hours consultant.

Nearly 70 percent of these health discussions take place outside of the usual clinic hours, indicating that patients are using AI when they cannot access human medical advice.

Risks and Controversy

The shift has elicited stern rebukes from safety advocates, despite the adoption of such policies.

The report is timely, as the SR bot has recently come under scrutiny following a case of poisoning in 2025, when the bot’s advice on dosages resulted in a user suffering serious complications.

Critics argue that while the model has improved, it remains prone to “hallucinations” fabricating plausible but incorrect medical facts.

The platform is currently facing ongoing lawsuits regarding the reliability of its medical outputs, with experts warning that substituting professional care for algorithmic advice remains a dangerous gamble.
