xAI has added major features to its generative media engine, Grok Imagine, in the most recent build of its iOS app.
The updated app, now called Version 1.3.28, became available on the App Store earlier this week on January 3, 2026.
As is usual for an official release post, the announcement is terse (aside from pointing to “Improvements to Voice and Imagine”), but it illustrates ongoing efforts by xAI in fine tuning the model’s visual generation capabilities.
Grok Imagine is the platform that powers the app’s ability to generate visual content from text prompts.
Sharpening the Vision
The newest version of the app aims to improve the user experience beyond just its creative functions. Currently, users can use Grok Imagine to create not only static images but also 6 second videos with sound.

Another hot feature is being able to take your old static photographs and animate them into quick videos.
“This 28th release is looking to encore performance and quality features around these computationally intense processes.
Enhancements are usually reflected in faster processing times, higher quality output videos, and increased performance to the user’s sophisticated instructions.”
A Rapid Update Cycle
The xAI development team has been working hard over the holidays to pump out a very aggressive update schedule, which most might argue is beyond necessary, but here are the details for 1.3.28.
Note this is just a few days after the last three or so patches put out to fix problems. It goes to show their quick and dirty model, where they are trying to turn around feedback and make models more stable on iOS.
This relentless focus on polishing the Imagine capability is important, given xAI wants to position Grok as a multimodal “AI Companion” and not just a text based chatbot.
