OpenAI and Anthropic Double Coding Limits for the Holidays

OpenAI and Anthropic Double Coding Limits

It’s a wonderful week to be a software developer. To celebrate the holidays, top AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic have both put out announcements indicating temporary limit increases for their leading coding AIs.

It’s a welcome breath of fresh air compared to the numerous caps that routinely frustrate power users of these autonomous agents.

Anthropic Leads with “Room to Create”

Anthropic kicked off the holiday bump, announcing its decision a day before its rival. The company is offering a 2x capacity increase exclusively for its Claude Pro and Max plan subscribers.

This additional usage allowance is in place from December 25 through December 31. The purpose, according to Anthropic, is “to provide developers with ‘more room to think, plan, and create’ as the end of the year approaches.”

OpenAI Follows with a “Thank You”

OpenAI soon joined suit, announcing that it had reset and doubled the rate limits for its own Codex tool, powered by the massive GPT-5.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the spike is a “thank you to users.” This increased allowance will be valid until January 1.

Relief for Builders

The temporary limit increases are intended to help a broad range of users, from hobbyists and indie builders to full-time professionals.

The “overhead” gives them the cushion to handle things like heavy compute workloads, such as complicated bug fixes and ambitious code refactors, without hitting walls on how much they can upload.

The response on platforms like X was one of instant delight and attempted humor. One commenter joked that, with the spare AI muscle on hand, they won’t come back from the holiday break until the New Year.
