The AI boogeyman is back, and this time it’s the code that’s speaking. OpenAI seems to be preparing a major update to its coding capabilities, leaks are suggesting that new Codex model codenamed Caribou is on the way.
If what we’ve seen is to be believed, the company will soon release its developer tool iteration on the monstrous GPT-5.2, and your code could get wild with it.
This transition represents a move from experimental to production-ready tiers to a unified, production-grade coding infrastructure targeting realistic software engineering.
The GitHub Leak
It was through digital detective work, not the announcement of a press release. The model selector in OpenAI’s public Codex repository now specifically mentions “Caribou” as a new addition to the existing list of models.
This “slip” gives evidence that OpenAI is preparing for a landing. Unlike previous cycles, which divided models into “standard” and “Max” flavors, signs are that we may see Caribou debut as a single beefy baseline capability making the choice simpler for developers.

Built for the “Long Haul”
The transition to a GPT-5.2 base is significant. Where previous models were great at generating snippets, GPT-5.2 is a “frontier model” designed for tasks that require long-term input and professional knowledge work.
For “Caribou,” this likely translates to:
- Deep Context Awareness: The possibility to comprehend the entire repositories and some not only isolated files.
- Production Stability: An emphasis on “real” software labor: refactoring, debugging, and maintaining existing code as well as solving LeetCode problems.
